An honor

The Friends of Calligraphy in the San Francisco Bay Area is celebrating it's 40 Anniversary. Four times a year they publish a journal that is now 28 pages thick. In the latest issue they reviewed a sub group called the Robins. A group that has been in existence since 1997. We make books for each of us that include the work of each member. Although I have rotated out, the group gathers and continues to inspire. For some reason, one of my pieces was featured on the cover! This is was done in 1999 and I am so humbled to have me piece so prominently displayed. The Alphabet has featured the work of some really famous and talented calligraphers.

Here is my 15 minutes of fame:

The back features a piece by my dear friend, Barbara Parke-Wolff who also was in the group.

Quiltation

My art quilt group gave themselves a challenge to create an 18x24 quilt that has lettering. Well, that was pretty easy for me, the one in the group who was a calligrapher. At the moment, I can only present my quilt, but hope to add others later. There was such a terrific variety of work.

I had shown this piece before, but that was before I appliqued it and added embellishments. Again, this was a challenging block.

We each chose our own quote. I was less afraid of lettering on fabric so chattery me, ended up with the longest quote: Art-the expression of a personality in a particular way, through individual creative work, the development of an idea that opens the eyes of others to a different outlook on a subject. Constance Howard

I guess that I do hope that this project has achieved just that!

A truffle a day

Moving right along to lesson two, I have drawn a truffle with a note card in the background. Hopefully, it looks good enough to eat. For me, there is much to learn about mixing colors and capturing the details in each piece.

Calligraphy was my calling for almost 30 years. After I retired, I have done very little lettering. However, I just had the "need" to do some lettering-to feel the flow of the shapes and to lose myself in the project. Guess that this is what drawing everyday is all about-the joy and peace that the action brings.

Christmas greeting

For many years (OK since high school and I'm now a grandmother) I have made my Christmas cards. Some time ago I had purchased gold lined envelopes and I was determined to use them this year. Also, I had the urge to do some lettering. So, there is watercolor, zentangle and calligraphy for this greeting. And to all, I do wish you love and joy.
