A truffle a day

Moving right along to lesson two, I have drawn a truffle with a note card in the background. Hopefully, it looks good enough to eat. For me, there is much to learn about mixing colors and capturing the details in each piece.

Calligraphy was my calling for almost 30 years. After I retired, I have done very little lettering. However, I just had the "need" to do some lettering-to feel the flow of the shapes and to lose myself in the project. Guess that this is what drawing everyday is all about-the joy and peace that the action brings.

Watercolor Lesson

Recently I cam upon a book, Painting Realistic Watercolors by Dawn McLeod Heim. There are 10 projects and all of them are terrific. Sometimes when I have to remind myself that it is alright to practice on a already designed format. OK, just like coloring when I was a kid. But, it does help. Her detailed instructions and color mixing are very helpful. So, I have one lesson done. Well, it's a start!

Now to the second lesson which is a chocolate truffle. Yum. Of course, I have 6 other projects going, so we'll see how soon I finish it.

Catching up

Ahh, there are so many directions to take and so many projects that I want to try.For Christmas I received a couple of books on zentangles. This mandala was a result of studying the many designs.

I am continuing doing my "dot" designs. The quality of this pictures is not the best, but I hope that you can get the idea of a painted 14 x 14" canvas that has gold acrylic, foil collage and puff paint dots. So many more designs are racing through my little head.

I did go to Ohio which is about 2,000 miles from here to see the grandkids. There was snow that lasted for a couple of days. Hey, California girls don't see this this beauty. The 4 year old had to go out and touch the snow on the deck. His adventure lasted about 25 seconds. Notice that I took the picture from inside the house.

My violets

Yes, I've been doing many art projects, but had to settle down and prove to myself that I could do some sketching. One of my African Violet plants was the key subject. I have a journal in which I've chosen to just use a sepia pen. I was surprised (and disappointed) at how long it has been since I added a sketch to this journal. Even longer since it seems that I put the date as 2012!

New direction

I've gone in a new direction. Not sure how long this interest will last, but I'm enjoying "the now". I'm using acrylic and puff paint. OK, not the medium of the great masters, but it works for me.

The blue piece is 10x10. I painted the board four times, drew a grid, used a template for the circles and then added the dots.

The other piece, which is beige (14x14), required taping and drawing the cross and the square on point. I did end up needing a compass for the larger circles. I am learning so much. I really don't use acrylics so finding out that you need more than a 1/8th inch amount of paint on the brush is the first step. Also, one needs to work from the center out. So it is wise to have the design pretty thought out.

Christmas greeting

For many years (OK since high school and I'm now a grandmother) I have made my Christmas cards. Some time ago I had purchased gold lined envelopes and I was determined to use them this year. Also, I had the urge to do some lettering. So, there is watercolor, zentangle and calligraphy for this greeting. And to all, I do wish you love and joy.

Small acts of kindness

      A nurse who is in my quilt guild, has taken the lead in encouraging us to make "lovies". These are blankets that are about 18" square and have flannel (pajama material) on one side. They are relative easy to make. The purpose for these lovies is to put them in Sheriff's cars so that the officers can hand them out to children who are under stress.

In addition, a contribution of a small toy would be appreciated. So, I went to the local bargain store and bought a couple bags of soft cuddly creatures. The young man, in his early 20's, commented on these soft toys. I explained their purpose. He replied, "been there". I was stunned. I certainly didn't ask for details, but he had needed protection as a young child. I did ask if he was OK. He replied that he was, but I could tell that it still hurt.

As I left he said, "It's nice to know that someone cares."

   Later, I wish that I had thought to say, "Many care, we just don't always know how to reach out."

     Needless to say, I came home and made some more lovies.

1st place

We had our River City Quilt Show this past weekend and I won a ribbon in the small pieced category. My entry was part of a challenge. We were given two fabrics and had to make a quilt, bag, garment, curtains of whatever one's creative mind could dream up. There were some big quilts and small ones. This quilt was about 28" by 30".

One of the center green yellows and the turquoise were the given fabrics. Well, by the time I had my design and got to the outer edge, the turquoise was too loud. So, I took fabric paint and sponged it on the bright fabric. Hey, there was nothing in the rules that said the process was not allowed.

After a summer break, figure drawing sessions are again being held on Friday mornings. We start with 2 minutes poses and work up to the longest pose of 35 to 45 minutes. There is sooo much talent in the class. I enjoy seeing the different media that people use from charcoal, to pastels to watercolor. I'm like the kid in the candy store. I want to try everything. However, I seem to settle on pastel pencils for the longer poses.

This was a 35 minute drawing. I am beginning to get some of the concepts and proportions correct and then--I know that I have so much more to conquer. That's OK, it's fun to keep trying.

Watercolor and pumpkin

OK, I have never done a watercolor of someone I'm supposed to recognize. But, I decided to do a monochromatic version of my twin grand babies. There are many flaws, but it is a start and my husband had that special smile when he saw it-so I'm getting there. Gathering the courage and just doing it was a big step.

Earlier I drew the giant pumpkin that was growing in our backyard. Here is a photograph of the carved 92 pound vegetable. We did save some seeds and we'll see what happens next year. Yes, my farmer husband won the contest against his buddy.

Fabric Mandada

It seems that I am attracted to mandalas which are circle drawings representing the circle of life. I found this pattern in a magazine and I'm sure that they did not expect it to be made this way. The center sparkle is Angelina which is a polyester that is heated and melts to form the shape you desire. It also can be cut after being heat set. Beads were added. For all the bright quilts that I've made, I'm finding these quieter colors, very calm and pleasing. Only a little hand stitching, machine pieced and quilted.

There was a sketchcrawl gathering in Davis, CA yesterday. I only managed to get one complete drawing done as there were other demands on my time. However, I needed to be grounded and drawing helped.

Zentangle moleskin finished

The zentangle moleskin is complete. The project started in April and I've finished in October. Since there was now time schedule, I was able to let the pages flow at their own pace.

This dot page almost looks like an animal. That was unintentional.

Yes, there is satisfaction at completing this project, but a certain emptiness lingers. I am constantly alerted to designs and want to keep up my awareness. My regular journal or another moleskin? Such great things to ponder.

Back to my routine

My trip to Ohio to see the grandkids was a non stop event. Below is one of the few quick sketches that I did in almost two weeks. Oliver, the three year old got sick and was lying on the sofa with a wet wash cloth on his head.

The twins, however, did not slow down!

The girls had an "official" shopping trip with real money.

Imagine-- they were quickly out of cash.

Now I'll get back to my slower art work routine.

By the way, on my son's computer I notice that there were three pictures of a recent quilt shown on my blog. Here, at home, there are only two. Don't mean to post too many. Sorry.

Computer problems such as two colors of type can trip me up.

Zentangle Journal

The moleskin has only 2 1/2 pages left. It surprises me that I have come so far. What will I do next? Oh, something to ponder. I continue to find designs in some of my old journals and certainly in other blogs, magazines and books. Guess I've found my calling in detailed work.

Rocks

Rocks are my latest challenge. I'm taking a watercolor class and the first assignment was rocks. Oh dear, how could something so simple be so hard? Well, my instructor liked what I did and gave me a big clue as to why it worked-the 40% rule. Using a gray scale from one to ten, there should be at least a four jump difference between the light and dark areas. Remember, I need basic instruction in this subject. Anyway, I'm so proud.

Then I decided to do another pile of rocks. This time I used Intense pencils. All this practice helps me to not be so afraid. Now, however, I need to jump into water!

Quilts of Honor

There are a couple of programs that are making quilts for returning servicemen/women. This time I have made one for the Quilts of Honor organization. Individuals can request a quilt for someone who has served in the military. As donations are received, the quilts are given out.
It just happened that I finished my gift this week, the week of 9/11 rememberances.The quilt is about 60" square which was one of the parameters. Red, white and blue are the preferred colors, but that is not an absolute demand. Design is up to the quilt maker.

You can almost see the detail in this picture. The quilting is done with a "free motion" method that allows me to control the stitch design (instead of straight lines) which means that I can do zentangles.

I have no idea who will receive this, but I hope that it brings him/her comfort knowing that there are many people who care.

Last Saturday there was a Sketchcrawl gathering in Davis, CA. There were about 12 of us who met at the Co-Op, a store with many delicious foods! A smart place to meet. You can check out Pete Scully's site to see more about that day.

Zentangle moleskin continues

The journey continues and I'm getting near the end of this moleskin. I'm very glad that I decided to do this project and that I have actually continued to work on it. The quote is: The past can't be changed but I can alter the way I let it affect me in the present. I certainly need to remember that on the golf course.

Zentangle moleskin

My moleskin is about two thirds full and it's just letting me know that there are many more designs that could be added. One neighbor described my book as lace. I thought that was a sweet observation as I'm still wondering about my "style".

The following pages are rather intense. I challenged myself to fill in the sections which created by randomly dividing the pages. I just wasn't in the mood to add any color. I think that there is enough happening using only black!

Inktense pencils

Sketchcrawl was this past weekend, but I decided not to make the 50 mile round trip to meet with the group in Davis. So, I went into the backyard and chose the pumpkin leaves for my study with Inktense pencils. the challenge is on to get a better understanding of how to use these colors.

The story behind these leaves is that a friend bought a package of giant pumpkin seeds. He kept half and gave the other half to my husband. We'll see who wins.

Zentangle moleskin

Zentangles, as well as most any art, can calm you down and just allow you to be. I decided to add lettering to this moleskin collection. There are no hidden messages. In the pattern I simply used letters that would create an interesting pattern. The color is from colored pencils.

OK, it's 101 degrees today, so the thought of staying indoors is appealing. Besides doing some drawing, I'm making a quilt that is coming together nicely. I'll show it when it's at a more finished stage.

Amazing Esther

Esther is a very special friend. She is 97 years old and has just moved from California to her daughter's house in Texas. Now this woman is not an inactive little old lady. She has lived in many different states, as well as England and Mexico. She is a retired school teacher and has precise handwriting. Esther sends lots of personal notes and is very thoughtful about remembering birthdays. She writes poetry and for her 95th birthday, we made a book of her poems (she helped to paint the covers) and gave them to friends and family. She has been part of a Spanish club, a book club, a writers group and was a member of her church here in Sacramento.

Well, she has been at her daughters for a little over one week and she sent her first e-mails!! Maybe the reason she stays so young and alert is that she is willing to try new things. While on the computer, she got to see my blog. Now I want others to know how very proud I am to know Esther.

In another direction, Jennifer Edwards had a drawing on her blog and I won! I will receive some of her greeting cards and tags. This is my birthday week, so I seem to be especially blessed this year.

Zentangle moleskin

The zentangle journey continues. Here is the latest installment which includes a face. I continue to be aware of shapes in nature as well as in magazines and other print media. This section is 3 pages of my moleskin.

One evening I just plunked myself down, determined that I would do a sketch. With a Pitt pen I drew this violet (I'm so proud that it is blooming). Over two sessions, I added the colored pencil.

Triple digit temperatures today. I did have to water some outdoor plants as they were drooping by noon. Yikes!

The Dog and the Sketchbook Project

It seems charming to have birds build a next in a tall shrub right next to the house. We got to watch the mocking birds bring twigs and nest building supplies for the perfect home. Finally the little ones hatched. Now, mom and dad become real protective when the little ones begin chirping. PROBLEM: we have bird dog. Apparently he is very patient.

Note that one bird is on the chair while the second dive bombs Cody, who doesn't seem interested in moving. After all, it's his home 24/7. Alas, two babies became victims to Cody. We never found any eggs so we are not sure if there was a third baby. The problem is, the birds built a nest there last year and they will probably come again. Oh, if I could control nature!

Figure drawing

Well, summer has arrived and the figure drawing sessions are over until late in August. Here are a couple of 15 minute sketches that I did last week. I continue to learn and to admire the high quality of work by others in the class. Yevgenia Watts who I met through EDM was able to join our group for the day. She does such fine work.

A shock came this week. Pamo's blog no longer exists! She apparently just had too much happening. Personally, I'm going to miss the laughs. Yet, she must take care of herself and I wish much happiness for her.

Three old ladies

This picture has been around for years. Grandma died in 1970, so you know that this is old. It just struck me as funny so I sketched the three old ladies who were dressed for a luncheon. My grandma is on the right-barely tolerating the other two who are apparently not prim and proper! Think that my aunt in the in the center and I have no idea who is on the left wearing a fur stole.

Over six months ago I did this envelope and the note inside as a gift for a dear friend who is retiring as the volunteer head of my annual calligraphy retreat. Carla is such a sweet person and has done so much for the Friends of Calligraphy. Today was the surprise presentation so now I can talk without worrying about spilling the beans.

I visited the grandkids in Ohio. We stopped at Easton Mall which is a whole village of stores. The kids and I waited in the car while their mom ran into a store. I took advantage of down time to sketch.

Iris at the cemetery

Sacramento has a lovely old City Cemetery. Famous people such as John Sutter (think of the discovery of gold), Stanfords (railroads) and Virgil Earp (Wyatt Earp's brother) are buried there. They have a heritage rose section which is maintained by volunteers. Yet, it was the Iris that caught my eye today. I took an "artists day" and spent time wandering, taking picture and painting. There was no deadline and there were so many lovely flowers and plants. This was a very calming experience.

Believe that the top Iris is named Root Beer. I drew with a Pitt Pen and used Inktense watercolor pencils.

Many of us are enjoying doing zentangles. I have admired the journals where one person does some and then passes it on to the next. Well, it seemed like to much work for me to connect with people who really want to work in that format. So, I bought my own journal and have started doing zentangles just for me.

I really don't know where this journal will lead. I am sure than my style will evolve. I hope to enjoy the process. It's funny, I keep reminding myself of the freedom to do what I want. There are no absolute rules. I can create to my heart's content. Amen.

Sketch quilt

The quilt that I've titled "Generations" is finished. This was my entry to a challenge presented by my art quilt group. The guidelines were that it should be 15" x 24" vertical and monochromatic. We drew color chips from a bag and mine in a rosy sepia color. I know that most will have an array of colors, but I wanted to challenge myself to using a minimal span of colors. Maybe because of the sepia color, I jumped on the idea to do my grandparents wedding picture. The project snowballed and I also did my parents, my in-laws and on the bottom, my husband and me. The quilt has been quilted by machine and by hand.

The figures were drawn with a Pitt pen and I brushed on color from oil paint sticks. The close-up is of my in-laws, Betty and Don. OK, there is something "off" in each portrait, but the love is there. In fact, it was a more emotional project than I have anticipated. I kept thinking about how each of the ancestors were married "until death do us part", the shortest was about 35 years. Really, there is no formal picture of my parents, so their drawings were done from a 1943 picture-they were married in 1939. I had on a silly headpiece that you can see was crooked in this picture. How unimportant the clothing-what is important is the marriage. A fancy wedding is no guarantee of a successful marriage.

Later this month, I will be able to see how other met this challenge. I've sure that there will be a wide variety of designs.

What one person can do

My friend, Ron, used to jog around his neighborhood. He began picking up trash. Then he realized that there was a strip of dirt between the sidewalk and wall that was just begging for some attention. Since he is a Master Gardener, he decided to plant a garden. He improved the soil and planted California poppies (our State flower) and iris. Oops! twice the city sprayed for weeds and killed the new plants. After going to the city council, he got them to realize that something good was going to grow.

People will stop and thank him or honk as they go by while he tends his garden.

We call it RON'S WALL. This is what one person can do.

Sketchcrawl in Davis, CA

Saturday, under the leadership of Pete Scully, we met to sketch at the Davis Arboretum. A delightful treat was meeting Barbara whose blog is One Happy Fool. She drove over an hour with her trusty sidekick dog, Demi to attend her first Sketchcrawl.

If you check Pete's bog you can see a drawing of me, Barbara and Demi. Below is the piece I drew while he sketched me. I was afraid to reach for another tool, so I left it as a pencil sketch.

No matter where we go, our eyes are opened to new scenes to draw.The journey continues.

Sunshine is really important to me. I've set up the outside table and chairs and have begun to spruce up the garden. I even made a trip to the nursery before the crowd which will jam the aisles this weekend. Certainly I didn't want to overwork, so I sat at my table and drew this plant which will grace the table and some other spots in the yard.

Saturday is a Sketchcrawl day in Davis, CA under the leadership of Pete Scully. It's probably not the "official" one, but the gardens at the University are just waiting for us.

Clear day

Oh glorious wonders. We actually woke to a clear sky this morning. After two weeks of rain, spring has finally arrived. As I looked out our upstairs window I saw the moon positioned over this tall cypress tree (bush). A candle for our new day!

Figure drawing

OK, I continue to sew for my grandbabies, but the opportunity for attending figure sessions is one that I don't want to miss.

This first drawing was a 20 minute pose. For these two pieces I used pastel pencils. I continue to learn about the figure as well as the many tools.

This yellow reclining figure was a 30 minute pose. There are hints that I'm getting the idea. However, when I finished, I realized that her head was to small and I added more hair. Ahhh, nice idea, but still off. Yet, I pleased that I learning about shading. Each Friday morning for three hours I get to join some really talented artists. We do work in silence, but many, when asked, will share their knowledge at breaks.

Cute dresses

Being the grandma of twin girls is going to be fun! I've been on a sewing kick and made two dress that are the same pattern, but different color combinations. The mom is not hooked on identical outfits which keeps the projects more fun for me.

OK, I am doing lots of drawing, but some projects a grandma just has to do.

100 Portraits project

Like others in the EveryDay Matters group, I'm challenging myself to complete 100 portraits. Slowly I'm learning. In fact, I'm determined to improve. The more sketching I do, the more I want to do. I jump from making cute clothes for the grandchildren to sketching to quilting. Almost afraid to slow down!

Drawing on Fabric

OK, this is my first attempt, but I'm so excited. I'm so happy to have pushed myself.

This is the first stage in a monochromatic quilt challenge. The whole quilt will be 15 x 24". This piece is 7 x 12". All sketches will be in this combination of pen and oil paint stick. The couple are my grandparents in their wedding picture from 1907. I see some tweaking that needs to be done, so I'll get to it. I could redo the whole piece, but I only have so much fabric. Part of the challenge! There are several more sketches that will be included. BUT, I have taken the first step and it is big for me.

I'm back from see the grandchildren in Ohio. A three year old and twins (4 1/2 months), can really keep one busy. No drawing was done during that visit!

Since I've been home, I finished an small project (10x13") that included the use of "puff" paints. I just had to do this clown. The fabric is fused on and then stitched. The dots are the "puff" paint. The background is quilted using a variegated thread and there is a fine yarn for the hair. I just had fun!

At the Sketchcrawl I observed a woman doing all her work with a fountain pen. She then used a brush with water to smear the ink and create texture. Thought that I'd give it a try. Don't ask why the palm trees are leaning, I don't have a good excuse!

On the same day, I sat in the bleaches (where I was supposedly watching a soccer game) I decided to draw and paint the pile of backpacks and clothes in front of me. This was another piece where I got lost in time as I worked.

By the way, my team blew a 4-1 lead and the game ended in a tie. OK, I did watch some of the game.

Aubrey Beardsley

These are my copies of Aubrey Beardsley's work. I continue my study of "lines and grids" which was my topic for the Sketchbook Challenge. In many ways his he was a master of zentangles, he just didn't know the term.

He died at age 25 (1872-1898) of tuberculosis. There was a period where he did some erotic drawings. Towards the end of his life he converted to Roman Catholicism and wrote to a publisher begging him to destroy all obscene drawings. Naturally, that was not done and the publisher sold those drawings and forgeries.

Strathmore Journal

Being one to take advantage of a free offering, I've signed up for the Visual Strathmore Journal class. Not sure what I am doing or if I want to pursue this style of art but, I'm doing it. I'm learning to use Gesso, oil pastels and the odds and ends that I have floating around.We'll see where this project takes me.

Yesterday was very relaxing as I had no outside commitments. From my second story studio, I drew our tree. I just sketched until I was tired of the project and that had such a calming effect.

Bok Tower, florida

Bok Tower Gardens was the surprise that I relish when we go on vacations. I did have it on the itinerary, but had no idea that the gardens were so lovely. Edward Bok was the editor of Ladies Home Journal for 30 years. He was a Dutch immigrant and wanted to create a carillon bell tower similar to one in his homeland. The grounds include his mansion, a nature observatory and the Pine Ridge Nature Preserve Trail.

Here the two resident swans are feeding at the base of the tower. One swan was rescued from Hurricane Katrina and is a bit territorial. The tower is 205 feet tall and was dedicated to the American people in 1929 by President Calvin Coolidge.

There is a shed with benches that will seat maybe 15 people. The above is the view through the window in that shed. Yes, I would have loved to stay to draw or just to relax in this lovely space. But wait, we had to go to a soccer game. Oh well, at least I got to enjoy this lovely American treasure.

Home and Enthused About the New Year.

Not sure where to begin. We are back from our two week vacation in Florida. Now let me explain, it is not always warm in the Orlando area. We were there to watch soccer games including one at 8:30am on the 27th and a later game on the 28th. Both started late, due to a freeze delay. On later days, it did get warmer as it seems that the temperature can jump 20 degrees overnight. Bok Tower Gardens were a highlight for me and I'll show pictures in a later blog. We arrived home on Thursday afternoon and I went to the figure drawing class Friday morning before we even had time to shop for food. Hey, I have my priorities!

Each of these drawings were about 20 minutes in length. I was afraid that what little I had learned last year would have been lost as we have not had drawings sessions for about three weeks. Little by little, I am learning.

The next picture is the cover of my Sketchbook Project. My dear friend, Barbara, made the lovely paste paper that I used for the cover. This is not a line and grid design, but it's my book and I'll be obstinate and do what I like. I'm very glad that I took on this challenge, but I could feel my energy draining towards the end. Planning a trip to Florida and trying to celebrate the holidays spread me a little thin. Oops! it happened again. I cannot see the picture of the cover, but you probably can. Think that is a message to stop talking for today! Cheers, Sandra

Blessings of the season

Now is the time that we share love and wish for joy throughout the coming year to all.One of the ways I'm doing this is by making an "Can you find?" quilt for my 3 year old grandson.

Hopefully he will want to play the game of learning to read the words, finding the picture, color or perhaps a letter as he is snuggled under his new cover.

Below is a close up of one section. I included his name and in other parts the name of his parents, sisters, grandma and grandpa. Yes, I've having fun!

Really, it's observation that makes this project go. This pyramid grid is taken from a quilt that hangs over my bed. This color layout echoes the colors of the chakra.

The last page is a play on words. For the non Americans reading this, the joke is that gridiron commonly refers to an American football field. I'm just tweaking all the macho men.

There is a bit more to finish in this book, such as the title page and colophon and assembly, but the drawings are finished! Obviously, I was very controlled. No real surprise since I was a freelance calligrapher for almost 30 years. The challenge of stepping outside of the box and seeing was so rewarding. I'm now looking forward to practicing other techniques and drawing different subjects.

OK, I am still around and working on various projects. Here are (hopefully) a couple of pages from my Sketchbook Journal with the subject of Line and Grids:

These drawings are after work by Ron Barrett. I found this book, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, in my grandson's collection in Ohio and knew that he wouldn't miss just one book for a few months. The characters are as funny as the story. Notice how I divided the page into a grid!

I can only image that there is another picture below this text. It is of a circle drawing that again, is based on a grid. It says that it is downloaded, but I cannot see it. Guess that I'd better limit myself to one picture per post.

Quilt of Valor

After having so much trouble with the technical side of this blog, I am cautiously posting on my blog today. I won't push my luck and try to post more than one picture as additional photos seem to disappear.

This was a quilt that my friend Karen and I made for the Quilt of Valor Foundation. This organization is trying to make a quilt for all returning veterans. So far, over 33,000 quilts have been made. They have specific guidelines as they want it to be a certain size and quality.They also want a journal to accompany the quilt. We were glad to make it.

There is another organization called Quilts of Honor that is also making quilts for veterans. My next donation will be through them as they are more local to me. Each is reaching out to the the men and women who serve.

Catching up

I'm back from Ohio where I got to meet our twin 5 week old granddaughters and to play with the 2 year old big brother. I had visions of drawing the sweet little ones, but the best I could do was a couple of minutes drawing Loretta, one of the two hairless cats who was sitting on my lap. I mean, the breakfast dishes didn't get done until 4:30 pm. The parents are doing well, but what a lot of work.

Do you have a clue how many EDM postings are done in two weeks? It does take a while to catch up on the conversation and all your creative pieces-a task that I'm happy to do!

I'm having some challenges with Blogspot. I press to download pictures and they don't appear my blog. When I was in Ohio I saw three of the same picture on my blog using my son's computer. Here at home there was only one. I just tried to add a couple of pages from my Sketchbook Journal and they do not appear here. Any help would be appreciated.

Here are a couple of more pages for my Sketchbook Journal with the subject of Lines and Grids. The idea for the above piece came from my visit to the Crocker Art Gallery in Sacramento. Guess that there is a connection between seeing other work and translating it to your work. I used metallic colored pencils.

This was done with black pen and colored pencils.

I can feel the pressure mounting as I must get the journal done.

I actually made it the a Sketchcrawl gathering which was held in Davis, CA. Pete Scully organized this group and all went well. Lots of inspiration, pleasant company and fine food. Of course, what to artists do while waiting for lunch to be served? They sketch each other!

Fabric painting

The artists at Every Day Matters are constantly challenging and inspiring me. Shirley reminded me that I had Paintstiks hidden in my studio. They are oil sticks that can be used on fabric. It's hard to see the colors on this piece as I hid them under the stitching. However, the shape which I drew during my figure drawing session shows up. I cut the shape out of freezer paper, ironed it down and, with a stencil brush, added the color. Since I'm giving myself the permission to experiment, I added the dense stitching instead of just an outline and then quilted it with invisible thread on fabric that I had painted.

I'm so excited and want to share the newest additions to my oldest son's family.

This is big brother Oliver with his mom, Lindsay, holding Isla who was the first baby to come home.

These are the new sisters, Isla (Eye-la) and Ruby born Sept. 27th.

They live 2,000 miles away, but I do get to visit for two weeks in November!

I'm learning

I'm trying to overcome my fear (of failure?) and draw faces. Really now, what is going to happen if I draw in my sketchbook? For me, the fact that these faces each have their own look is a big deal. Now only 9,995 more to perfect this aspect of my art.

Today I attend the grand opening of the new wing at the Crocker Art Museum here in Sacramento, CA. This addition to the Museum is so terrific! Edwin and Margaret Crocker (made his money when the railroads were being built) bought a mansion and had it transformed to include an art gallery in 1886. From 1869-71 the two of them collected more than 700 paintings and 1,344 master drawings during a European tour. In 1875 Edwin dies. In 1885 Margaret gives the Crocker Art Gallery and collection to the city of Sacramento and California Museum Association.Over the years there have been additions to the collection and renovations of the mansion. 1997-99 the idea is underway to build the Teel Family (they own a grocery chain) Pavilion which acknowledges their $13 million gift. Today on 10-10-10, was the public grand opening. One room displayed a collection of work by Wayne Thiebaud. Since I seem to like contemporary art, I was blown away. So humbling to see so many outstanding pieces.

I do hope that you have an opportunity to visit this museum that is now able to display the old and the new.

Oh yes, they had a large gift shop and An Illustrated Life was on display. A woman was glancing through books and I told here that this book was so filled with journal pages of talented artists and it was so inspiring. I noticed that she had the book in her hand as she stood in the checkout line. I felt so proud.

Great Portrait and news

This wonderful portrait was done byYevgenia Watts who is a member of the Everyday Matters group. She has set a goal of 206 portraits in 206 days. Oliver is my oldest grandchild and this is right on!

The big news in our family is the birth of twin girls, Oliver's sisters. They were born Monday, September 27, about one month early. Isla (Eye-la) and Ruby have lots of hair and are doing well. Early babies need to learn to suck, but they are working on that process. Hopefully they will go home within the next week. Since they live in Ohio, and I'm in California, I will have to wait until the end of this month before I get to hold them.

Continuing my Lines and Grids journal, I've added the pages shown above and below. Trust me, I use grids for the text. I'm not one of those calligraphers who can lettered without some guide lines! I just keep saying to myself, "This is my journal, I put put what I want in it". Ahhh, what freedom (OK, there is some restriction, but not much).

Fabric painting

I did it! Thanks to the encouragement of Shirley I completed these two pieces. First, I ran upstairs to pull out the box of fabric paints that I had not opened. Then I found the bleached muslin that I had bought for this purpose. After the fabric was painted and the "sandwich" made (front, batting and backing), I used the sewing machine, set on free-motion, to stitch this figure. What fun! Who knows there this will lead?

New Season for Figure Drawing

Although faint, here is a drawing from my Friday morning figure drawing session. Believe that this was a 20 minute pose. The arm is a bit long, but I'm pleased with my progress from the sessions last Spring. The piece on a 24 x 18" paper. That is huge for me. One attendee, who I believe has taught art, is encouraging me to go bigger so that the figure goes off the page. Then, if I have a smaller area such as the hand, I'll be able to actually have a chance to do some detail.
Each Friday for 3 hours we get a model. We do several 2 minute poses, a couple for five minutes, followed by 20 minute time periods. The last pose may be 40 minutes.

A Special Gift

Sometimes you just get it right. I love this quilt and so did my 2 1/2 year old grandson, my chief critic for this piece. The fabric came with these adorable cats. I added the border and quilted it. Oliver immediately knew to put it on his bed. It makes nap time even easier.

Lines and Grids

Moving right along, although slowly at times, I've done some more pages for my Lines and Grids journal as part of the Sketchbook Project. Later, when we finish the quilt I will post the completed project. This is a gift to a service person who has served in the war, through an organization called Quilts of Valor Foundation.

Didn't want the journal too get to serious so I added the quote regarding ice cream cones. One of those silly quotes you get on the internet

The triangle is after an artist IL Lee. His work is predominately done in ballpoint pens and I was lucky enough to see a show at the San Jose Art Museum a few years back. I have plans to include piece after his style.

The last piece is influence by a local artist, Laura M. Manthey. I had such a delightful time viewing and buying some of her pieces. Since I like line, this was a perfect match.

My list of ideas is growing. Daily I can observe line and grid work. I positive bonus of this project.

Lines and Grids is the topic for my Sketchbook Project. That is pretty safe, since most of the tools I use leave a line. I have developed a new perspective on what I see. Look at what that artist has done! See the magic of those lines! How did they do that?! The above is lettered with homemade Logwood ink that was a gift. The quote was by Madeline L'Engle.

This pattern came from the book, 500 Wooden Bowls. I mean, there it is again. Observing and appreciating what others have done.

Needlefelting

I had to try it. This is study number 2 followed by study number 3. Don't think that this is going to become my passion, but at least I now know. Again, the process is to punch, with needles, the felt, fine wool or silk or other fibers into the base fabric which, in this case, is felt.Quilting and beads were then added.

The first step

OK, I've taken the first step. This is a page in the Art Sketch Journal. There are so many thoughts that went through my mind before starting. Yes, I changed the paper as I know that most of my work will be in pen and the original paper was too thin. The subject is lines and grids. One bonus of this project is that I am more aware of lines from nature and from other art pieces. Getting over the thought that this is really not meant to be a piece of art for final publication in a book for all time, I was able to grasp "journal". I'm looking forward to the rest of the pieces that will go into this project.

Thought I'd share a plant from my backyard. I call this a Lion's Tail, but I couldn't find the official name, so it may go by another name. It's fun to watch as each stalk keeps growing and may add up to 10 "tails". This is the biggest it has ever gotten and summer is not over.

Lettering in my jornal

It's been a few years since I retired as a freelance calligrapher. I really haven't done any lettering since. Suddenly-this was what I wanted to do. I have to keep reminding myself that it's my journal and I can put what I want on the pages. That is such a comforting thought. Yes, onward to combine lettering and drawing. It may happen.

If nothing else, I've enjoyed going through my old collection of quotes. My students were always encouraged to keep a file of special sayings. Then, when you want to practice-you have something to write. When I first started lettering, I would sit in the garage with the door up so that I could keep an eye on the kids as they played. At that time I would letter the name of each child in the neighborhood. Dang, the kids are all grown up.

Needlefelting

This project is done with a method called needlefelting. The light blue is delicate wool that is punched into the darker blue felt. There is a layer of Angelina (shiny polyester fibers added next-they don't seem to show in this picture). The medium blue is also punched with the tool that has about 5 needles. I then put tulle (fine netting) over the entire piece, quilted it by hand and added the beads. Yes, the beads are sewn on one by one. Hey, I like to do that sort of detail. The binding was some silk that I had painted which I found in my stash.

The piece is 8 1/2" by 11". Designing in a monochromatic color scheme was a very big challenge. Now I'm working on another study in this technique.

Journal sketch

I am constantly learning. Actually, I think that Michaelangelo said the same thing. This is the houseplant on our kitchen table. I am congratulating me for not doing a tiny anemic drawing and for not freaking out because the shading may not be perfect, etc. Believe that Danny's idea to just record the moment is the point. Oh yes, I've taken rubber stamp pads to color the page before doing the drawing.

Fused glass

An opportunity came up for me to try designing a fused glass plate. I really had no clue how to prepare and would certainly to it differently next time. However, this is the result. I started with a piece of clear glass, then thin rods of the black were laid down to create a basic shape. If there is a next time, the design might be drawn out and put under the glass as a guide. Scoring and breaking the little pieces was a challenge. The colored dots where just sprinkled onto the glass. Last, a second plate in the blue green color as added to perk it up. The glass is carefully placed in a kiln and there you have it. If nothing else, there is now a better appreciation of work by other artists!

Bird dog

The story of the birdies is not a happy one. Not only do we have a dog, we have a bird hunting dog. The growing birds were driving him crazy. Despite being dive bombed by both parents, he got two of the three birds. We can only hope that the third got away.

This hunting stuff was serious business. I did put a wire barrier up after this picture was taken, but he probably got to the other side and knocked them out. As much as I enjoyed watching the nest being built and seeing all the food being delivered, I hope that they do not try to build a nest in my yard next year.

Three babies in a bush

We've been watching momma and papa bird going in and out of a 6 ft bush that we have in the backyard. I was able to capture a picture yesterday. Today the babies listened to their parents and would not pop up.

Another Concert in the Park

This may become our summer routine. Sunday evening band concerts in the park. Give me a Sousa march anytime! As I drew the tree I realized that sadly, it has very few leaves. Think that comes with old age. I see that I draw older people. The kids are having fun on the play equipment which is behind me and they are to fast to sketch. Nice excuse.

We are family that is interested in the World Cup games. Of course, there is no way that I want to watch 64 games. However, the USA plays tomorrow and I'm hoping for a win. I'll worry until the game is over. Having a son in South Africa at the game, makes me more attentive. At least the boy knew to take two jackets. The temperatures have been around freezing for some of the games.

By the way, I have some comments done in Chinese characters with what, I believe, are not nice messages, so I've changed the way to comment. I have no idea if this is better or worse. I'll find out as the days progress.

Beautiful weather here in California. This is why we put up with the politics.

Band Concert in the Park

One of the joys of summer is the band concert in the park. This first weekend in June is a band festival which gives us two days of music, without charge. You can bring your chairs or blankets and enjoy a picnic while bands give us their finest sounds. Kids are attracted to the play equipment and the rest of us get to relax. I do take my sketch book and this year I'm seeing some improvement in "my people".

Of course I'm still much more comfortable drawing the backs of people. They are somewhat in proportion which is a big step for me. Wait, just maybe those session of figure drawing are beginning to pay off. The bluish drawings were done with a Sanford Noblot Ink Pencil 705 -"a bottle of ink in a pencil". The color has been darkened in Photoshop so that the images would be easier to see. The gray sketch was done with a Derwent Sketching Light Wash HB pencil. The color did not move a much. I believe that I need to make my marks heavier to get more action with the water. Geez, move out of my comfort zone. What a concept.

Onward

Well, here are the last three challenges for the month of May. I have gotten the feeling that I've bored viewers and almost bored myself. Bigger steps in my artistic journey might be more interesting. Yet, there is a sense of accomplishment. Will I feel lost tomorrow? Who knows?

Thoughts are turning toward the World Cup soccer games in South Africa. We have a son who is a BIG fan and will be attending the first two weeks of the games. All teams start in a group and will play each of the other three teams. USA has England as our first game and that is going to be very tough. Although there is lots to see, as outside the stadiums fans from different countries gather and it is celebration time all day long, I'm happy to be home and watch from my comfy sofa.

This trunk was in my grandma's scary basement until I used it to pack my stuff for college. Today it sits in our living room holding the old family photos.

The chair ( I drew the seat to long) was made by my grandfather who worked in the furniture department of a now closed furniture store that made the desks and chairs for the California state legislature. Furniture that is still in use today. This is a big chair because he was tall. I did not know him as he died before I was born, but I keep this as family history. A sense of belonging-a connection with the past..

This is was fun because it is part of my fabric stash. Hey, a quilter has to have a lot of material for the next project. Trust me, I know people who make my two sets of shelves look like a beginners collection.

A gift and challenges

First, I'd like you to look at Yevgenia Watts blog Watercolored Hands. She did a portrait of me which I consider a treasured gift. A while back, without knowing her, I had given Yevgenia an Over the Top award because I so admired her art. At some point she mentioned that she would be in Sacramento and we were able to meet for a short visit. She is so talented. To me, meeting internet friends is another bonus of joining EDM. If anyone else is in this part of the world, let me know.

Here are four challenge with only three more to draw for this month.

A glass and anything I wanted to draw, which was my violet which is blooming again.

This book is a little tricky to understand. The cover is a quilt block, Quilter's Fan, which is chipboard covered with hand dyed fabric. It opens from from both sides. Insides are pages created by five other artists. This was a round robin project. I chose the subject, Threads, and the layout. Each person added pages that was their interpretation of the topic.

Today I went to my figure drawing session and since I can draw anything I want for the 28th challenge, this is my submission.

Challenges 22, 23 and 24

Oh my, the month is rapidly coming to a close. Will the habit of drawing everyday be instilled in me?

This baby sock was what I found while visiting in Ohio. My daughter in law is going through boxes of baby clothes as she prepares for the twins. Such tiny little pieces of clothing!

Funny, I can sure tell the difference in my drawings when I'm in my own space.

Today I am supposed to draw anything I want. Now there is a challenge!

May Mandala

Before I continue with the challenges, I'd like to share my mandala for the month of May.

For this piece, I decided to use colored pencils. I have been doing these for more than two years. I try to do one a month, but sometimes I skip a month. Is there a time keeper? Just me.

The circle is 7" and the paper size is 10". I chose this limitation because a friend gave me a portfolio and I wanted the mandalas to uniformly fit. No magical or mystical reason.

Challenges 19, 20, and 21

Continuing the challenge of drawing each day in May, I'm posting the 19, 20 and 21st drawings. Being 2,000 miles from my home, therefore out of my comfort zone, pushed me and taught me more. Isn't having a portable medium supposed to make it all easier?

Something I've made is a stuffed toy. The dog is a baby gift for a special child, Kiera, who has CP. The color is red because her dad's favorite soccer team is an English team, Arsenal.

The golf club is from my son's (the FATHER of my grandchild) bag.

The golfer son collects old records (you know, the music on vinyl). He pulled an old Guy Lombardo album off his shelf. Apparently, drawing a straight line was a tough challenge after a day of watching a two year old. Gee, we are all on the downward side of this challenge, only10 more pictures to post

Challenges 16, 17 and 18

Time is just a little bit tight as I'm flying to see our precious grandchild tomorrow. However, I was determined to get today's challenge finish and to post the last three. Here we go.

For those not familiar with sewing tools, this cutter is the tool that replaces scissors for cutting fabric. You place it against a thick ruler and quickly slice off a piece of material. Yeah!

My boys, now both in their 30's, played the recorder in grammar school. It was required. Mom's hang onto things. I was happy to have a musical instrument to draw.

This is the view from my studio. It's fun seeing what others get to look at each day. We certainly do all have different perspectives! Now, I just need to figure out how to draw something I've made that I can take on the airplane.

Challenges 13, 14, and 15

Almost didn't make my self imposed deadline of one drawing each day in May. Today we had a luncheon at our house for our friend Esther, who is celebrating her 96th birthday! I mean, how many people even know a 96 year old. She is active, lives alone, mentally sharp and has school teacher handwriting. I can only hope to be doing as well should I make it to that age. So, finishing the leaves challenge was forcing this tired body to set priorities and chose to do the drawing for today. Obviously I managed.

The suggested drawing number 13 was obviously (I hope) a phone.

Number 14 was to draw what you see when you get up. This is the view from my bed. We have a two story house, so we see the tops of trees.

Tonight's piece was to be of a leaf, leaves or trees. I chose my new coleus. Interesting leaves is this plants gift. Now I'm ready to unwind.

Challenges 10, 11, 12

For those who may be new to this blog, I am participating in a challenge to draw each day in May, from a list complied by the group called Every Day Matters. The pictures push me to sharpen my drawing skills.

OK, all drawings are not going to be "right on". I do have long fingers, but these are a bit creepy.

Here I was to draw my glasses which do not have frames. To get both sides even is still my challenge.

Dinner tonight was homemade pizza (no cheese).

On to the next challenges. Sometimes I tend to make the project too hard. Yet, I am learning how to use the tools that have been in my studio for years. That is a good thing!

Challenges 7, 8 and 9

I'm continuing my challenge of drawing the the Every Day Matters list for each day during May.

I was able to really settle into project #7. I can tell the difference when I get into the zone.

Someone may have been expecting diamonds, but not for me. This is a pin that expresses "dream".

I was a tad afraid of this challenge. Wait, isn't that idea. To challenge ourselves.

Continuing with the challenge of a drawing a day for the month of May.

Yes, this is a ceramic mug. OK, no handle, but designed to hold pencils, pens, etc.

Challenge #5 is my bed. I really wasn't floating as I drew that, but I guess that I just wanted a different perspective.

This is a ceramic dog that used to sit on the coffee table when I was a little kid. Probably worth nothing financially, but it reminds me of growing up in Mill Valley, CA. Memories are priceless.

Quilts and zentangles

Recently I decided to follow the guidelines in a book, Kaleidoscope Quilts, by Paula Nadelstern. This is my first attempt. Paula does outstanding detailed work that makes my pieces seem every so humble.There are actually only four fabrics with bead work added. But I wanted to show you the quilting in the background.

First, it was very brave of me to use contrasting thread. I chose a varigated blue shiny thread. Then, I got into the zentangle mode and created shapes that, in the end, look like pebbles. This technique is called freemotion quilting where the quilt is moved as the needle is going up and down.. I am not restricted to straight lines. Basically, I was as free as if I had picked up a pen. This process made me realize that quilters have been doing zentangles for a long time-before the name became popular. Art expressed in a different form.

EMD Challenges 1, 2 and 3

OK, I'm saying it out loud. I am joining in the EDM challenge to draw from the EDM list, numbers 1-30, each day in May. Apparently, once you have committed yourself so that others hear your words, it's harder to back down. A continuous line drawing was very freeing. I plan to do more. Little by little this wonderful group of artists at Everyday Matters keeps encouraging me to push beyond my comfort zone. Thank you!

For the moment is seems that I can best handle a page that is divided into small spaces. In fact, I was talking to a friend about shopping and how I get overwhelmed in a large department store. She suggested a small specialty shop might be my type of place. Hummmm, she may have a point.

Here I timidly tried some colored pencils and my favorite Micron pens. The top right is a continuous line design that I just used, in thread, on a quilt. I'm really pleased and will post a picture when it is done. So, my zentangles help with machine quilting patterns. Oh my, one art form is related to another. What a concept!

I treated myself to a trip to Berkeley (about 1 hr 45 min) after meeting with a friend. Judi had seen an article about Nina Katz who challenged herself to draw, with pencil, in her moleskin each day. Sound familiar? Nina chose to do drawing of people found in the New York Times obituary pages. What a treat to see this exhibit! Each face was so unique. She made a note of the person's name, age and claim to fame. The collection was a year's worth of drawings.

Then, Nina chose to paint some of the faces. This was a tiny exhibit, but really powerful to me.

Again, someone has put aside the excuse-"I have nothing to draw".

Without following a lesson plan, I spent some time just doodling.

Taking time to remember the moment is, I believe, what Danny Gregory has been talking about.

This month I chose to use colored pencils. As usual, the circle is about a 7" diameter.

It is a variation of the flower of life found in sacred geometry.

I needed to sit and calm myself, to just think about things. Biggest on my mind is that I just learned that my husband and I are going to be grandparents to twins. This happens to other people, not us. I'm giving myself 7 days to get over the shock. I may do a lot more drawing.
